In terms of living in harmony with nature, hunter-gathering had certain advantages. Human beings could not take more from the planet than they needed for an extended period of time. The growth of an agricultural lifestyle generated new consumption habits as well. Humans began to produce more than they could use. Their stationary habits enabled them to store grains and vegetables in silos or to dry meat. Over the course of time, the human species began to exercise more control over plants and animals, carefully cultivating plants to suit their tastes and local conditions and domesticating animals with particular physical and temperamental advantages that made them more suitable for eating, milking or work.
